Wednesday Words originated in the fall of 2009 as a special reading series featuring award-winning writers from the Nebraska Arts Council’s Individual Artist Fellowship in Literature program.
Wednesday Words explores the many voices of contemporary Nebraska writers in the Braided River Series, a special schedule of readings from award-winning Nebraska writers. The special series began in 2011 and continues throughout 2012. Upcoming events are posted to our website.
Our events are FREE and open to the public. Wednesday Words is a collaborative effort between The Backwaters Press, The Nebraska Arts Council, and the Kaneko-UNO library.
The Backwaters Press was founded in 1997 in Omaha. It is a literary press that focuses mainly on poetry, and has published nearly a hundred books, including several anthologies, as well as collections of poetry by individual poets. The press has been awarded numerous book awards and was given the Jane Geske Award for 2011 from the Nebraska Library Commission for outstanding contributions to Nebraska literature.
The Nebraska Arts Council (a.k.a. NAC) is a Nebraska state agency which provides numerous grants, services, and special initiatives that help sustain and promote the arts throughout Nebraska. The NAC is supported by the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, the Nebraska Legislature, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
