The Backwaters Press is thrilled to announce our internship program! We are looking for qualified undergraduates interested in the world of poetry and publishing.  Our interns gain hands-on experience with the process of publishing and marketing titles for a small imprint.

J-Term 2017 Internship

Key Responsibilities

Over the course of the 2017 January Term, the intern will work with Backwaters Press staff to develop a sustainable marketing plan for future published works. This marketing plan will be used to promote all future Backwaters Press books before their release date.

Additionally, the intern will be required to assist with the January Community Poetry Reading.

Dates: This internship begins on January 3, 2017, and ends on January 24, 2016.

Skills

Desirable candidates will possess the following:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask
  • Creativity, and the ability to identify problems and potential solutions
  • Excellent computer and social media skills
  • Desire to gain experience in publishing, editing,  writing, marketing, advertising, or working with a small business

Education:

Qualified candidates will be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Program. Preference will be given to candidates studying writing, publishing, marketing, advertising, or related fields.

Compensation

While this internship is unpaid, our goal is to make this opportunity as meaningful as possible. In addition to course credit and experience working with a small, established publishing press, The Backwaters Press is excited to offer its intern(s) a variety of exclusive one-on-one and small-group networking opportunities with working writers and editors. These meetings will be scheduled into the intern’s January Term experience, and will give the intern a chance to build relationships, ask questions, and get advice from successful members in their field.
